There was a buzz around Central HQ, as usual, and mostly around the office of one Colonel Roy Mustang. Soldiers were darting back and forth between desks and rooms and hallways, shuffling papers and answering phone calls.
While all of his subordinates raced around the room in a flurry of blue and white, the raven-haired Roy stayed his typical calm, cool, and collected self. His boot-covered feet were outstretched over the papers scattered on his desk, and his dark eyes simply glanced at a few more forms he held in his gloved hands.
"Those kids had better get here quick," he muttered to himself, "so I can brief them before it gets any crazier here."

It was frustrating to know that none of what he was going to be called in for had nothing to do with the Philosopher's Stone. It was discussed previously that the Elric brothers would help in an investigation, something that seemed like a waste of time to the older brother.
But if years of travel have taught him anything, is that everything connects somehow. He hoped this would also ring true to the assignment, he hoped... strongly, that some clues to what they were searching for would come out of this.
Regardless, he eventually entered the office of his superior with his brother in tow.

When the two boys walked through the door, everyone stopped on a different beat to glance over and see who had entered the room before returning back to their work. Roy's eyes slowly moved upward to take a look and his expression lit up somewhat.
"Ah, you've finally arrived." Roy removed his feet from the desk and sat up straight. "How was the train ride?" he asked in a jocular tone. A sarcastic smirk spread across his lips. "No hijackings this time?"

"Haha, Very funny Colonel." Edward rolled his eyes while he leaned to the side, his tone showing his blatant dislike of the joking tone of Roy Mustang. A tone that almost always constantly proded at his nerve. "There better be a good reason you called us here so suddenly. Especially when we were so far away."

Hawkeye silently took her usual position beside Roy's desk and waited in obedient silence.
"I thought you might have guessed, FullMetal. Since we've exhausted all of our recent sources leading toward...well, that thing you're looking for, we've decided to give you another assignment." Mustang handed a manila folder full of papers to Riza, who then stepped forward and presented it to the Elric brothers.
"What do you make of this?"

He flipped through each paper, carefully scanning through the print. "Well... all these cases definitely seem connected at the very least.. But for all we know it could just be some psycho killing at random. There doesn't seem to be some kind of pattern." He tossed the papers back onto the desk. "What is it you want us to do about it exactly?"

"True, the only connection between the cases is that the same weapon was used on all of the victims. But even still, we're not entirely certain." Roy leaned forward with his elbows on his desk. He intertwined his fingers and rested his hands in front of his mouth with his shoulders slightly hunched. "Your objective is simple."
Riza spoke up then. "You boys are to gather as much information as you can by researching news articles and investigating recent, and possibly future, crime scenes. You will, of course, have access to all military files related to this case and other related cases." Outstretching her arm, the woman motioned to a comically large cabinet full of papers and files.
"But you won't be working alone on this case, boys. We've enlisted a little outside help for you." Roy turned to Breda, who was standing attentively near the door. "Bring them in," he commanded, to which Breda nodded and opened the door. A young girl, about Edward's age, stood alone.
"Tch, figures she would be late..." the man grumbled and shook his head, only half-serious.

Upon seeing the first, younger female, Edward's expression turned to surprise. He wasn't expecting to see someone else his age, much less another alchemist. When she was the only one to enter the room, he was almost sure that she was the only other person who was going to help them on this. However, this quickly changed when a few moments later the door opened again and the red-head strode into the room.
"Sorry I'm late. I was kind of hoping you would forget about inviting me to this thing.. until you called me again to remind me." She scratched her messy hair. "Which I totally appreciate and all.."

"Ah, nice of you to finally join us, Lieutenant." Roy stood up and gestured to the two females. "These two ladies will be your partners in this case. This is Major Samantha Serene, the Starlight Alchemist; and this is Lieutenant Alexandria Matthews, the Scarlet Bullet Alchemist. This," he said to the girls, now looking back at the Elric brothers, "is Edward and Alphonse Elric."
Sam's expression brightened at that comment, and she smiled at the boys. "Wow, the FullMetal Alchemist...I'm excited to finally meet you!"

Alphonse tried to ignore his brother's gaze searing holes in the back of his metal head, which he now rubbed promptly in a nervous reaction. "U-Uhm... I-I'm not.. t-the-" Before he was even able to finish his sentence, Edward pushed him out of the way, and stood up tall, in an attempt to make himself more prominent.
"-I'M- The Fullmetal Alchemist." He spoke in a firm tone.
Alexandria stood away from the group, her arms crossed over her chest with a monotone expression on her face. It almost appeared as if she was sleeping on the spot with her blank stare, but this was proved otherwise when she let out a small snicker at the younger man's exasperated expression. Apparently this wasn't the first time someone had made the mistake.

Roy merely let out a quiet sigh and shook his head, trying to hold back the snicker he felt building up in his throat. To disguise the muffled laugh, he cleared his throat and straightened his expression swiftly.
"O--oh, it's YOU?" Sam asked with a baffled expression. "I'm sorry, it's just...he's so tall, and...with the armor suit and all...I, uh, I think I've dug myself a deep enough hole now, I'll just stop talking." Her cheeks flushed a bit and she gave an embarrassed grin. In order to try and hide the chagrin she felt, Sam let her eyes travel downward, and her hair fell forward to cast a shadow over her face.

It was quite obvious at this point that Edward was fuming, you figure by now he would be used to the slander about his height and his demeanor, but it was still annoying none the less. However, before he was able to flip out on the poor female, his younger brother interrupted him.
"S-So we're going to work together with them?" Alphonse asked in his meek voice, seemingly intimidated by Alexandria's blank stare. "This is weird.. brother and I usually work alone."
"Problem?" Alexandria spoke up then, frowning.
"N-No!"

Riza spoke once more then. "Well, Ms. Matthews is one of the most skilled members of our investigations department. She has had a lot of experience in dealing with assignments like these. As for Ms. Serene, she just transferred here from South HQ. She has worked a few similar cases in their department, so she is also well-equipped to help you on this case."
"That," Roy interrupted, "and we've yet to find somewhere else to place her. It was just easier this way."
"I'm glad you have that much faith in me," Sam muttered to herself sarcastically.

"To be fair." Alexandria spoke up then. "I think my skills in solving issues like these have been more than.. expressed. I don't really think I'd need the help of a bunch of kids.. It's kind of insulting."
"What, mad we might outshine you or something, hag?" Edward cracked a wide grin, highly amused at his own joke.
Alexandria seemed instantly annoyed by his comment, and placed her hands on her hips. "Who you calling hag, short stuff?"
