:)Character personality: Sam is a typically positive person, who is usually in a good mood and is always polite to new people. She tends to let her stress overwhelm her, but tries not to let it affect the way she acts to people, i.e. taking her anger out on them. She is usually pretty mature. However, Sam also has moments where she can be childish. She never likes to lose an argument, and is very stubborn about getting her way. Sam considers herself to be more of a leader, so she doesn't always like taking orders from people, unless they are much higher in rank than she is, and/or she respects them. When left to herself, Sam tends to daydream often and sometimes her airyness is mistaken for sadness. Although sometimes, she uses that excuse to let herself think about things that make her sad. But she doesn't really like to show her vulnerable side to other people, so Sam will usually try and push those emotions and bad memories back so she doesn't have to think about them. This is one of the main reasons why she can sometimes have a bad temper, because she locks up all of her emotions and bottles them inside of her, and sometimes it builds up and she explodes.
:)History: Sam's father Ian, who lived in a small town between South City in Amestris and the Aeurgo border, was an alchemist who had attempted the State Alchemist exam multiple times and continually failed. Every time he took the written exam, he passed with flying colors. During the interview, his determination showed and he made a great impression on the higher officers, though they were unsure if he would be able to handle the stress. However, when it came to the alchemy demonstration portion of the exam, he always seemed to fumble or mess up, and he never quite made it. He would simply shrug it off at first, blaming it on his nerves, but it eventually drove him mad. Ian, who was struggling to deal with the stress of not being able to pass the exam, lost his job, and his wife Elana was beginning to worry that they would lose their house. This was all when Elana was pregnant with their daughter Samantha.
When Elana gave birth to Sam, they were ecstatic, but worried. Ian was able to use his alchemy to make small things like a crib and such for their daughter, but after he had lost his job they slipped into debt and were unable to pay off their hospital bills. Desperate times called for desperate measures, and being unable to find any other job, he became a hired assassin.
In his off time, Ian spent much of his time teaching Sam alchemy from a young age. Elana was glad that Sam seemed to like learning alchemy, but she worried that it would put the same pressure on her eventually as it did on her husband.
By the time Sam was seven, Elana got sick from the stress of the debt and worrying about her family, and due to this lowering her immune system, she contracted a serious illness. They were unable to afford medicine for her, due to their debt, so she spent most of her remaining time lying in bed or tending to their daughter when Ian was away.
It seemed, at first, as though Elana were beginning to get better. But three years later, when Sam was ten, she finally died from a serious case of pneumonia. Before her death, she gave Sam the necklace she was given by Ian, a gold, heart-shaped locket on a gold chain. Inside there was a picture of Ian and Elana (right) and an engraving of an alchemic symbol that Sam had never seen before (left).
Ian would leave Sam home alone for short periods of time while he was away at work (still as an assassin), occasionally having a neighbor check in on her to make sure she was alright by herself. Years passed by in this fashion, and eventually Sam turned 13. At this point, she was becoming quite the talented young alchemist. She knew how happy it made her father when she learned a new trick or technique, so after school every day, Sam would spend almost all of her time studying alchemy texts rather than playing with other children. Because of this, some of the other kids thought she was strange, but she was able to handle herself whenever the other kids might tease or pick on her. Sometimes, she would even use her alchemy to get herself out of sticky situations such as those.
One night, Ian was assigned a hit on an aristocrat with a highly skilled team of bodyguards. He knew that there was a strong possibility that something could go wrong, so he said good-bye to his daughter, trying to keep her unaware of the fact that this may be the last time they'd see each other. He left that night, and never came back. A family friend broke the news to Sam, and she was crushed. She stayed with them for a short while, but soon after she ran away with an important goal in mind: to become a State Alchemist.
Sam got by through stealing food and sneaking onto trains as she made her way to Central City. She knew of the Central library there where she could read all the alchemy books and teach herself everything she'd need to know in order to pass the State Alchemist exam. She had heard of the 12-year-old boy who had miraculously passed the exam with flying colors, and figured that if he could pass it, so could she.
Living on the streets, Sam had encountered many dangerous people and situations, and she had no money to support herself. A strange-looking man, who seemed to recognize Sam somehow, offered her a job in exchange for a very large sum of money. Being young and naive, she accepted, only to find later that this man had known her father before his untimely death. He revealed to her what her father had been doing before his death in order to support his family, and convinced her that in order to survive, she would need to do the same. She took an alias, Takai, and disguised herself as a boy to prevent herself from being caught, and began following in her father's footsteps.
When she turned 14, she attempted the State Alchemist exam. In her file, it was stated that her father had attempted the exam almost 10 times, but never managed to pass. She, much like her father, passed the written exam and the interview with flying colors. Then it came time for the demonstration portion of the exam. Sam decided to use a technique that she had created, inspired by her father's teachings. By extracting and combining the carbon, hydrogen, and helium atoms in the air, she was able to create what resembled a star. It's most practical uses included illumination, heat, and when done correctly, they could be used as miniature bombs. Transmutation has three steps: analyzing what makes up the original matter, breaking it down, and then putting it back together in another form. If one transmuted the 'star', and then used a separate transmutation and stopped at the second stage of breaking it down, the atoms could be split and the instability of the transmutation would cause an explosion. This kind of critical thinking impressed the judges, and they awarded Sam with an official State Alchemist pocket watch and a certificate, assigning her the title of the Starlight Alchemist.
:)Dreams/Goals: To find a way out of the horrible situation she got herself into, and to keep her dark and terrible secret from her friends and from the military.
:)Specialization: She can transmute the Hydrogen, Helium, Carbon, and other gasses in the air into miniature "stars". Though she has to use transmutation circles, which she will usually draw on her hands with a marker.
:)Fighting: She likes to fight hand-to-hand, but when it's a serious battle, she'll usually transmute a sword from the ground as her weapon. Sometimes, she'll use her stars like bombs.
:)Weaknesses: She often acts on impulse, even in battle, leaving herself unprotected. Sometimes, she forgets to make sure she has transmutation circles drawn on her hands before going into battle. Sam has a phobia of total darkness, which is what motivated her to transmute stars in the first place. She absolutely hates sexism and easily loses her temper, which will often times distract her or make her drop her guard.
:)Other: As an assassin, she uses the alias 'Takai'. However, she disguises herself so that everyone thinks Takai is male.
The red in her hair is actually dye. She first dyed her hair red at the age 12, and stopped at age 16.
She has each ear pierced once with a small silver hoop in each hole.
She carries a small, white backpack over her shoulder. Inside, there is a marker (she draws transmutation circles onto her hands with it) and a small, black, leather-bound book with information on Alchemy inside of it. Various other things (such as money and other necessities) are inside of it as well.
The person she hates the most is the leader of the assassin group.
She likes to tease Ed about his height, but sometimes he will come right back with some sort of sexist comment ("dumb girl", "weak girl", etc.) to make her mad. THAT'S when all hell breaks loose.
